Contusion

2022

A contusion is an area of injured tissue where blood capillaries have ruptured — a bruise.

Each wooden hoop is stretched with the artist’s paint rag and hand-embroidered. The installation is adaptable to its surroundings, allowing its form to shift in response to the spatial context. The work examines the fragility and translucency of skin, transforming the fleeting nature of bruising and other forms of contusion into a lasting material presence.

“I couldn’t find the words. I saw it as a fleur du mal — a blossoming of affliction, a gorgeous, roseate pain.”

“It’s like something Jackson Pollock might embroider if his day job were surgery.”

“Through the skin–textile fusion, I feel the rawness and pain. What a powerful expression of how it is.”
